Welcome to Mr. Gardner's Site!
Welcome to Mr. Gardner's fifth grade class! We have now begun a new year and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone as we journey through fifth grade math and science.
I hope you enjoy the website. This site is for anyone interested in the goings-on of room 220.
This site will keep you up-to-date with daily homework assignments, long-term projects, and other important information regarding our classroom. This site will also provide examples of students work and students at work.
Field Trip Update
The students had a great, yet wet day in Plymouth. The students got to meet some of the famous Pilgrims as they traversed around Plimoth Plantation. This was a splendid opportunity for the students to see what life was like for the Pilgrims. They also visited the homesite of nearby Native Americans to get a sense how they were living at the same time. Our next trip, Boston's Freedom Trail, will take place Tuesday, June 9. We will be sending out permission slips and chaperone requests in the next few days. Thank you all for your continued support.
Homework
Please check to make sure your children are doing their homework. There is, except for rare occasions, math homework every night. Science will generally be every other day. Weekend homework will generally consist of long term projects and a math review sheet. Homework completion is essential to mastering fifth grade standards.
Just like the rest of the MESMS, our class uses the Accelerated Reader program in order to enhance the reading of our students. Each student has a reading level that was determined at the beginning of the year. They must read books in this level. Each book they read has a point value and a corresponding quiz on the computer. Once they finish a book, they take the quiz, and accumulate more points. Each student has a points goal for the term that they are working towards.
According to our reading specialist, it is imperative that each child reads for an hour a day. Everyone reads for a half hour in school, the other half hour is homework. Please, make certain your child is reading. It is the best way to improve.
